How to marry an Igbo Girl.

Hi Hunnays,

So yeah, how does the igbo traditional marriage go? Let me share the little I have learnt.
The ceremony is in 2 parts.

● Ikwa Aka (introduction)

Depending on the igbo community involved, the groom pays a firs visit to the father of the bride in the company of his father or an older relative or a close family friend to be formally introduced and schedule a latter visit.

And The second visit involves the groom and his family going to meet the brid's family.

●Igba Nkwu (Traditional marriage)
This holds at the bride's Paternal home. The intending groom would have been handed a list of items to present at the engagement.
The items are usually symbolic and cover different sections of the ceremony.

Section A:  Umuada (all kindred daughters)
Section B:  Umunna (Kinsmen)
Section C:  N'mepe uzo (opening gate)

This is just a summary. One thing you should know though, The igbo traditional marriage ceremony can be expensive sha, lol

    1. Iniobong the only two traditional fabrics are the "Akwete/ Abada" and the George. The akwete is the african print fabrics that some wear with "jigida " (waist beads). There are a number of contemporary brides these days that do not even use these fabrics.

    2. They are expensive depending on the part of Igbo land... the major thing d groom brings are the things on the list.. and its mostly drinks and kolanut frm my side and as for the bride price... we take just the first note of any amount brought.... according to the elders u dont ever finish paying for a bride neither are the brides for sale. As for the traditional wedding or igba nkwu.. this is usually taken care of by the bride's family the groom isn't ought to pay because the he is the visitor but in some cases the groom supports.. (optional)..

Yea the bride price is soley determined by d father of the bride... 2 of my elder bros got married from Enugu and Anambra and the bride price listed wasn't upto 20k and it was just the first note that was taken.
